The Humane Society of the United States is doubling the reward it is offering to anyone who provides information that can lead to the person or persons responsible for Florida horse killings in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
The organization announced Tuesday that it is offering $5,000 for tips, an increase from the standard $2,500 reward.
Since January, 17 horses in Miami-Dade and two in Broward have been found butchered or dead and abandoned in rural areas. Police and animal-rights advocates have said they think the horses are dying to fill the demand of a growing black market for horse meat in South Florida.
